X-Legion 1500 singles 1.

Well. Here we are, with a belated report of my dismal showing at the 1500pt X-Legion Tournament held in Landford at the end of August.

I took what I thought to be a fairly hard Space Wolves list (I will be coming back to you Ultramarines! I promise!):

Master Of Runes with Chooser, Jaws and Tempest’s Wrath.

Runepriest with Chooser, Meltabomb, Jaws and Murderous Hurricane.

2 units of 8 Grey Hunters with fist, banner, wulfen, meltagun and a rhino.

a unit of 9 Grey Hunters equipped as above.

3 units of Long Fangs, 1 with 5 ML, 1 with 4 ML and the last with 3 PC and a HB.

Game 1 was Annihilation with DoW deployment (oh gee! My favourite…) saw me up against Dark Eldar. Mike Marlow’s Dark Eldar to be precise. It was something like:

Baron Sarontryx (or whatever his name is)

1 or 2 Haemonculi

2 units of Trueborn with 3 Blasters in Venoms

2 units of Wracks in Venoms

1 unit of 20 Hellions

3 Ravagers.

Suffice to say, I held the skimmers and Hellions back right up until my Runepriest failed to cast Tempest’s Wrath. At that point the Dark Eldar pounced and pretty much systematically destroyed me. It didn’t help that Mike couldn’t fail a cover save, and I couldn’t pass an armour save!  Mike got a convincing victory, and eventually won the tournament flawlessly, so I suppose I shouldn’t feel so bad about loosing.

Game 2 was Seize Ground with Spearhead deployment. I was up against Darren Gwynne and his superb Ultramarine army, all painted as 1st company:

5 Strenguard

2 Tactical Squads (1 with Rhino, 1 with Razorback)

Terminator Squad with Cyclone

Ven Dread with MM in a Pod

Land Raider Redeemer

What could possibly go wrong. I had more than enough meltaguns to deal with both dread and Land Raider. I thought that right up to the point where I entirely missed the Land Raider (which then cooked the entire GH squad) and only 1 out of 4 melta shots hit the dread, then rolled a 3 for penetration…

It didn’t stop there, oh no. In one of the subsequent turns, his Terminators caused exactly 10 wounds on 1 Grey Hunter Squad. I lost 1 grunt, the Wulfen, Wolfguard, Powerfist, Meltagun, Banner and a wound from the runepriest, all on rolls of 1…

Despite killing off the Dread, Terminators, Razorback and a combat Squad by 1 GH squad Darren won by 1 objective, as my Troops choices were wiped out…

Game 3 was Capture and Control with Pitched Battle deployment, and this time I fought Adam Cox’s Eldar. And between Adam refusing to fail 4+ inv’s and just eating Grey Hunter Squads with a seer council, and my Rune Priests failing to nullify ANY psychic powers, I got hammered again…

At the end of day 1 I was 0-0-3, and pretty much pissed off at my dice. But still, tomorrow would be different, it had to be…right?…

X-Legion 2500 points iv

Right. Back after a short break to get married!!!

Where were we? Ah yes, game 4.

For the final game in this tournament, I was pitched against an old friend, Andy, and his Inquisition army, that was something like:

lots and lots of Death Cultists

some crusaders

a few more Death cultists

storm bolter/meltagun acolytes

some more death cultists

2 Storm Ravens

some death cultists

and 3 Psyfleman dreads.

We played a varient of capture and control, with some more minor objectives scattered across the board.

Suffice to say, only the major objectives mattered, as we tore each other apart so badly that by the game’s end we only had 1 troops choice left each. I had 3 Grey Hunters hiding behind some rocks on my home objective, and he had about 8 Warrior acolytes on his. Sadly for Andy, I also had a badly wounded thunderwolf in combat with those Acolytes, that not only refused to die (1 wound left in about 5 rounds of combat!) but was also just within 3″ of his home objective.

Highlights include my Wolf Lord destroying 1 Stormraven by throwing a Meltabomb into it’s air intake, and in the same round, the Thunder Hammer armed TWC bringing the other one down.

These same Wolves pretty much then got beaten up by the contents of said Storm Ravens (An Inquisitor with Rad Grenades, 12 Death Cultists and 8 crusaders, and his Techmarine joined in as well)

The Vindicare Assassin shot 1 Long Fang Pack Leader dead, then caught 5 Krak Missiles (I’ve played against this list too many times to allow that git to survive too long!)

When the end of the game came around (on turn 8 or so) I had also got him on VP’s.

Out of 2500 points, I had only 2 and a half Long fang packs, 1 Thunderwolf, and 3 Grey Hunters left, whereas Andy had 8 warrior acolytes, and 2 Chimeras left.

It was a thouroughly enjoyable game (even if both of us threw our toys out of the pram occasionally) and a good end to the tournament. In the end I placed 16th out of 30, which wasn’t too bad I suppose.

Roll on the 1500 point Tournament in August, where the sons of Macragge shall once again take to the field!

X-Legion 2500 points iii

Fresh on the Sunday morning, and I find I have been propelled up table 6 or so! And I would be facing Lee Ellis-Hall’s Dark Eldar. And my word. There was a lot of vehicles. 6 Raiders, 3 Venoms and 3 Ravagers in all.

Basically, I just plain got shot to death over 7 turns. Venoms kicking out 24 shots a turn, coupled with more Dark Lances than you could shake a Thunderwolf at, spelled doom for the Warriors of Fenris.

My couple of highlights were my Thunderwolves basically seeing off 30 wyches including Lelith (who fell off the board) and Tempest’s Wrath immobilizing a good 60% of Lee’s vehicles.

Lee was an excellent player, and a good chap as well. He simply outplayed and out shot me. I think at one point I had 150 poisoned shots coming at me!

And with that, down the tables I went!

X-Legion 2500 points.

Saturday 25th June, and there I was at Landford village hall, putting my ‘unstoppable’ force of Space Wolves out on a tray to carry from table to table… And my word there were a lot of intimidating armies there, from the 6 battlewagon list of Tony Chew, to the horrific number of Chimera hulls in Adam Cook’s guard list (14 I think it was!).

So, suitably worried, I was assigned a random table and my opponent turned out to be fellow X-Legion veteran Ian Manson and his Orks. Now the last time we met, he absolutely crushed (literally!) my Ultramarines. So naturally I was concerned. Especially when he proceeded to put down 3 Battlewagons (one with 15 zoggin’ Burna Boys of doom in!).

The mission was played lengthways along the table, and the objective was to capture each 18″ sector along the table with a Troops unit. This might be difficult for me as I only had 3 Troops units.

However that turned out to not be a problem as I got tabled anyway…

Highlights (well, sort of) include my first ever use of Jaws dropping 3 bikers AND the Biker Nob down a hole, and blowing up a trukk with a missile that could just about see it. That’s where the good stuff ends for me. About 11 hits did for all of the Thunderwolves (yep, all 9 wounds in the unit gone, including the Wolf Lord who managed to stuff the only 3 2+ armour saves he had to make), my unit of Grey Hunters with 2 meltaguns failing there pinning test when there Rhino blew up, followed by them failing a morale test next turn, and being shepharded off the board by a Trukk (yes, they still had 2 meltaguns…). Me bringing on my Wolf Scouts next to the Burnaboyz Battlewagon, and forgetting about them, only for them to take 90 flamer hits in the Ork’s shooting phase. and my last Rune Priest being sawed in half by a Deffkopta’s buzz saw after surviving all the attacks of 15 Lootas…

I wasn’t actually tabled but when I said ‘shall we call it there?’ I did only have a Rhino sat in front of 15 Lootas, and 1 Long Fang about to be flattened by a Deffrolla…

So that left me fairly low down on the tables…

I take Space Wolves to X-Legion

This weekend was the X-Legion 2500 point tournament. I have been going to the X-Legion tournaments for many years now, with varying degrees of success, from stone cold last at one of the doubles tournaments, up to a respectable 9th with my Black Templars at one of the ‘GT practice’ tournaments.

This time I decided to take my freshly finished Space Wolves:

HQ1: Wolf Lord with Runic Armour, Wolf Claw, Storm Shield, WTT, WTN and Thunderwolf Mount.

HQ2: Rune Priest with Master Of Runes, Terminator Armour, Chooser Of The Slain, WTT, and Jaws and Tempest’s Wrath Psychic Powers.

HQ3: Rune Priest with Chooser Of The Slain, WTT, and Jaws and Living Lightning Psychic Powers.

E1: 10 Wolfguard with a mixture of kit and weapons. 1 with MoW attached to the 8 man GH squad, 1 with twin claws attached to the Wolf Scouts.

E2: 5 Wolf scouts, 1 with MoW, 1 with Meltagun, all with Mbombs.

T1: 8 Grey Hunters, MoW, Powerfist, Banner, Flamer and Rhino with Extra Armour

T2: 10 Grey Hunters, MoW, Powerfist, Banner, 2 meltas and Rhino with Extra Armour

T3: 10 Grey Hunters with Power Weapon and 2 Plasma Guns.

FA1: 3 Thunderwolves, 3 Storm Shields, 1 Thunder Hammer, 1 Meltabomb

HS1: 6 Long Fangs with 5 Missile Launchers

HS2: 5 Long Fangs with 4 Missile Launchers

HS3: 5 Long Fangs with 3 Plasma Cannons and 1 Heavy Bolter.

Find out how I got on soon!
